Questionnaire

Questionnaire

This is a questionnaire that I have created to find out information from my young target audience of 15-25. Below each question i have stated the reasons for asking these questions and their importance in Blue.

Music Video Coursework Questionnaire

Name, age and gender:

1. What genres of music do you listen to?
·         Pop
·         Rock
·         Indie
·         Dance
·         R&B

I asked this question as I thought that it was important to find out popular genres of the group of people.

2. What colours do you think represent this genre of music?
·         Red
·         Orange
·         Yellow
·         Green
·         Blue
·         Black
·         White
·         Other

I thought it was important to find out what colour represent the genre so that it would be recognisable through its products to its audience.

3a. What do you consider to be most appropriate style of music video for the genre of music you have listed that you listen to?
·         Narrative- tells a story
·         Performance- the song is performed
·         Concept- based around an idea or concept

When analysising music videos i found that particular styles of music videos suited different genres therefore i asked fans of the genre what they think would be best.

3b. Circle yes or no for each style of video
·         Narrative- would you prefer the artist to be within the story?
                                      Yes                     No
·         Performance- would prefer to see the artist performing in the style of a narrative video rather than to an audience?
                                      Yes                     No
·         Concept- would you prefer the idea/concept to be based around a serious issue instead of a cheerful approach?
                                      Yes                     No

I asked this question to find out the best way to go about the style of video.

4. What do you think makes and affective music video?

I asked this question to gain some qualitative data and get straight to the main point.

5. What do you think are the most important aspects of an album cover?
·         Involvement of the artist
·         Involvement of previous logos/ colour schemes (on previous albums)
·         Colour
·         Text

This question was asked to discover what information is the most important and therefore be the most attractive on the product.

6. Do you think it is important for the list of songs to be on the outer packaging of the digipak rather than inside?
                                                   Yes                     No

I think finding out the placement of these items are important as some may prefer an intimate message inside as though it is from the artist.

7. On the inside of the digipak which of the following would you consider to be the most interesting?
·         An image representing the artist/genre
·         Information about the artist
·         Information about the album
·         List of songs

I asked this to find out the key features that should be included inside, so that it is not over crowded with information inside.

8. What two features would you say is most effective in grasping your attention on an advertisement for an album?
·         The text
·         The images
·         The overall appearance (Colour, format, size)
·         The construction of layout
·         Involvement of the artist

I think this is important to find out so i am able to establish a main feature to focus on.

9. What one piece of information would you find to be the most important to advertise and therefore be the most attractive?
·         The band/artists name
·         The name of the album
·         The date of release
·         The list of songs on the album
     Where you can purchase it

Again i think it is important to find out key features so that they can be focused on and made to be the most attractive.

Interview with industry expert

Tobie Scopes

Tobie Scopes is a member of drum and bass band Serial Killaz, a producer, record label owner and head of A&R, that visited our Media Studies class to discuss and give advice on our media project. We spoke about a range of things including his background, digipaks and music videos, these are some key points I found would be useful to note down to improve my products.

Importance of the layout of a digipak, Scopes spoke about how he had to send back a copy of his digipak to the artist that designed it to redesign so that 'DJ Hype' was at the top so that it was the first thing visible. He also had to send back another digipak to be altered, although the artwork was very creative on the vinyl, once transferred to CD album cover, it would not be clear.

We learnt about creating value for money when designing the products, features such as; no stopping between tracks, extra posters, and codes for free digital download would give a greater reason for the audience to buy. Important information that may not be obvious includes; a catalog number, record label and distributor.

Tobie also pointed out that it is essential that the artwork represents the artist as well as the genre, for example a crazy shape which could be anything, cliche and obvious but you still know what genre it is.
